Different types of aiming devices in Indian Defence forces are discussed hereunder:

The armed forces use different aiming devices to target enemy objects. These devices are also known as “Sights” or “Optics” that are used on modern firearms. These optics are placed on small arms such as SMGs, Assault Rifles, LMGs, Squad Automatic weapons and Sniper Rifles. Optics help soldiers to hit targets by providing an accurate aim.

Telescopic Sights

The short form of Telescopic Sight is “Scope” . It is an optical sighting equipment based on refracting telescopes. This scope is perfectly equipped with reticle, it is mounted at the correct position in its optical system to provide a clear point of the aim. Telescopic sights are used in almost every system that requires magnification of the objects.

Telescopics sights are the oldest optical sights ever made. Some telescopic sights were developed during the 18th century and they were used in sniper rifles during the first and second world war. This aiming device has helped Indian Armed forces to target their lethal enemy and attack on them. Nowadays, telescopic sights have become an important part of modern rifles and DMRs.

Iron Sights

Iron sights are antediluvian sights that are used presently. These were the first sights ever used by the soldiers for aiming their target. The concept of firearms came up after the evolution of firearms. Its invention was almost the same as the invention process of “Rifling”. This provided more correctness to the fire arms.

An iron sight consists of two main components: a rear sight that is placed perpendicular to the line of sight and a front sight that is bead, post, ring or ramp. Most of the iron sights are modelled to be adjustable for sighting in firearms. These sights are present on every firearm for a backup.

There are countless youngsters who have an unending desire to join the Indian Armed forces. Some of them are interested in joining the Naval forces of india. All they need to do is qualify the CDS exam. If anyone needs astounding training then they can approach a leading CDS coaching institute in Chandigarh.

Holographic Sight

The other name to holographic sight is holographic diffraction sight. It is a non-magnifying gun sight that allows soldiers to view through a glass optical window and notice a holographic reticle image that is superflaused at the distance on the field of view. The hologram of the reticle is built into the window and is illuminated by a laser diode.

Holographic sights are the most common aiming device used by the defence forces across the world. Generally they best fit on the submachine guns and assault rifles. These sights are prefered by Indian Army and often placed on their AKs.

Red dot sight

A red dot sight/reflector sight is an optical sight that allows soldiers to look through a partially reflecting glass material and see an illuminating projection of the target. Usually a dot is imposed on the field of view.

These sights work as per simple optical principle that any object at the focus of a curved mirror or focus of a lens will appear to be sitting in front of the viewer at distance. Along with firearms, Red dot sights are used on telescopes and cameras. On cameras, they are efficient in clicking photographs of birds, aircrafts and other flying objects.

Thermal/infrared optics

This sighting device combines a compact thermographic camera and an aiming reticle. They are mounted on almost every small as well as heavy weapon. These sights make use of infrared radiations that are reflected from the target’s body to form its impression. These sights are helpful during night and are commonly used as night vision optics. Some night vision equipment work on the principle of magnification of light but thermal opticals can easily see through smokey screens.

There are various defence entrance exams that can be cracked for securing a dignified job in the armed forces. Are you preparing for the AFCAT exam? If yes, connect with a reputed AFCAT coaching institute in Chandigarh.
